On August 10, 2020 at approximately 4:00 pm cst a category EF-1 tornado touched down in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago. It was 300 yards wide with winds of 110mph and was the first tornado to hit our neighborhood in over a decade.
Our trees were ravaged. The Chicago Tribune reported that more than 7,000 mature trees were lost to the storm. Trees that just a few days ago towered at 60-70 feet tall are gone. Streets and sidewalks that were canopied in greenery and shade are now concrete desserts.
This fundraiser is a way for us to come together as a community and rebuild our forest ecosystem. Rogers Park needs trees. We need them for personal reasons. We need them for economic reasons. We need them for environmental reasons. Our trees are part of our identity. We need to replace them as our legacy to future generations of Rogers Parkers.
